About Xolly Mncwango
Xolly Mngcwango is a South African contemporary Gospel musician. She released her debut studio album, Jesus is enough, in 2020 after spending close to 10 years working with renowned Gospel artists and choirs, including the famous Joyous Celebration. The album received positive reviews from Gospel believers who hailed her for delivering passionate worship.
After starting her career with Joyous Celebration in the mid-2010s, Xolly Mncwango has gone on to become one of South African Contemporary Gospel’s essential voices especially after the release of her critically acclaimed debut solo album Jesus Is Enough in 2020 which came with impactful praise songs such as the popular ‘Ungukuphila’ and ‘Healing Power.’
Born to a church going family in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, Xolile Mncwango has been singing for most of her life. She was part of the worship team in her church when she was spotted by South African music titan Lindelani Mkhize, who recruited her to the South African Gospel Music institution that is Joyous Celebration. “From then on, there was no turning back because the spotlight remained on me,” Xolly, who admits to being a reserved individual,” says.
The singer was part of Joyous Celebration, Vol. 17 (Grateful) [Live] which was released in 2013 and the project gave her the kickstart her career needed.
Thereafter, she became intentional in her pursuit of a music career. She studied music theory at Varsity College to further her understanding of the craft and performed regularly at the iconic BAT Centre which was the breeding ground for Jazz in Durban.
Xolly has continued to collaborate with fellow Gospel artists including Benjamin Dube, Mnqobi Nxumalo and rapper Jub Jub who featured her on his 2021 single ‘Ngithembe Wena’. “One of the things I genuinely enjoy is working with someone who has a personal story. Someone who says, ‘I know God for myself’,” she says of working with Jub Jub.
The singer’s sophomore oǖering Unusual is a continuation of Jesus Is Enough thematically. “I’m just experiencing the unusualness of God and I’m walking with that, and I want to share it with the world,” she says. In creating the album, she retained the same team she worked with on Jesus Is Enough, which includes her long-time producer Siyanqoba Mthethwa who she trusts with her voice and ideas. “I enjoy working with people who understand who I am beyond music,” Xolly adds.
